John Youngs undertook works to construct a new classroom of the future and biosphere for Notre Dame High School in Norwich in March 2007.
The project comprised the transformation of an existing school library area into a classroom of the future. Careful consideration was given to protect all areas of work during construction and to keep pupils out of danger.
The scheme involved the use of a high-tech overhead service tray incorporating gas and electricity services, making it flexible to achieve a variety of seating layouts within the new classroom.
Part of the project involved the construction of a glass and aluminium biosphere for the study of self-sustaining eco-systems, together with a wind turbine, large solar panels, and weather monitoring equipment. Data from the equipment is fed into the adjacent classrooms, enabling pupils to monitor the local environment.
