John Youngs began work on the new eco village hall for Neatishead, on the Norfolk Broads, in February 2009.
The building is one of the most environmentally-friendly village halls in Britain, constructed from timber frame with straw bales and shredded newspaper as the primary means of insulation. It replaced the old Victorian hall and involved construction of a 153 square-metre main hall and 29 square-metre meeting room, as well as kitchen, toilets, car park and play area.
The local community, including children, were actively encouraged to participate in the construction phase where appropriate and felt genuinely involved in the project. The first community activity involved over 170 people helping to move straw bales into the hall ready for use by John Youngs, and 15 – 20 volunteers were subsequently needed each day to help build and render the straw bale circular meeting room. Free training for the volunteers was provided by Amazonails.
